Curriculum
The curriculum is divided into four main areas
under which the aforementioned goals and objectives fall:
- Clinical
Practice: The fellow will serve as an attending faculty member in the
emergency departments of both Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) and Stroger
Hospital of Cook County (CCH). Each year, he/she will provide an average of 24 hours/week of
clinical coverage for 36 weeks. Internationally, the fellow will be
involved in three international missions per year. The fellow will be part
of IMC’s medical team, on two different missions, practicing EM in
developing countries overseas. The total duration of missions with IMC
will be 10 weeks. In addition the fellow will spend 2 weeks in a developed
country (e.g. Europe, Australia, etc…) in order to be exposed to the
whole spectrum of emergency health systems. The nature and scope of each
will be clearly outlined in advance.
- School
of Public Health: The fellow will pursue a core curriculum of Masters in
Public Health at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in the division
of Health Policy and Administration. This division focuses on identifying
the best policies and administrative practices to improve population
health that are consistent with the constraints of available resources. In
addition, the fellow will be exposed to different areas pertinent to the
fellowship like community health, immunization programs, child-maternity,
epidemiology, biostatistics, and health information systems.

- International
Curriculum: In addition to clinical work during international missions,
the fellow will learn how to perform an assessment of existing emergency
health systems, evaluating the needs and the resources, will help design
emergency health care programs that address the identified needs and
formulate a plan of action for quality assessment, and will assume a key
role in developing and implementing emergency medicine educational
training programs. The main focus will be on resuscitation guidelines,
emergency procedures, pre-hospital and hospital based emergency medicine
training all based on each country’s needs and resources. In addition,
fundraising and grant proposals for international field missions are also
part of the curriculum.
- Research:
The fellow will be expected to be involved in a minimum of 1 research
project per year related to international emergency medicine suitable for
publication based on the experience acquired. Many research opportunities
are available through the many international field programs already
established through IMC. The fellow will focus the research on
international emergency medicine development.
